Visit Heraklion
Heraklion is the largest city and the administrative capital of the island of Crete and capital of Heraklion regional unit.
Inhabited throughout the years by the Ancient Minoan civilization, the Muslims, the Byzantines, the Venetians, and the Ottomans, Heraklion has many sites of cultural and historical interest for you to discover.
The most famous archaeological site in Crete is the Minoan Knossos Palace, built on the hill of Kefalas. Some well-known Greek myths are linked to this place, like the tale of Minotaur’s maze and the tale of Daedalus and Icarus.
Go back in time with a walk down the harbor, where you can see old Venetian shipyards, ramparts, and the 16th century Koules Fortress. It’s a scenic walk with many cafes and restaurants along the promenade where you can taste the Cretan cuisine.
